Well, this here is a thread for the qualifying rounds of the 2006 World Cup.

England seems to be in trouble: squeaking through with three points tonight by a Polish own-goal - not much hope there. Two games in, and 4 pts; if we counted only the goals England scored, then they would only have two points.

France simply sucked against the Faroe Islands. Tempus volat, hora fugit.

Scotland 0 - Slovenia 0

but promising signs especially in the first half (hairs on the back of the neck stuff). Still only 1 point though. This group is going to be tough, the Italians are not playing well - yet. Norway look pretty poor so the group is pretty wide open.

Next up Norway at home, we need 4 points from the Norway and then Moldova away.

The Canadian team really isn't that good. They just lost to Costa Rica last night 1-0 on a really weak goal. That loss has basically eliminated them from CONCACAF qualifying. They are playing such world powers as Costa Rica, Belize, and Honduras. Oh yeah, I think that the J.S. Woodsworth high school team might also be in their group.

A few years ago hopes were high for the Canadian team because they beat Brazil in a friendly, and then did very well at a tournament in South America, but it looks like the optimism might have been a flash in the pan.

But the Canadian hockey team is doing really well at the World Cup of Hockey right now.

Scotland lost to Costa Rica too - in the finals (World Cup 1988 (if memory serves correct)) i remember (literally) a friend of mine turning up in the pub in tears about it. Costa Rica were the team that we had to get 3 points from.

I don't think Scotland would fancy playing Honduras either, the Latin American style is very difficult to play against, apart from that, their players learn more "natural" skills. Their system and style are very different from a European approach. Almost any player in a good Latin American team can play in any position, such are their skills.

If you get a chance to watch any "Champions League" football you should. Some of the games in this tournament are truly top drawer. Like Tuesday for instance - Glasgow Celtic v Barcelona. More poignant because Henrik Larsson (Celtic legend - 7 years with the club) returns as a Barca player in his 1st European game for them.

pinko,
my son watched the entire france-faroe islands game: he must have spent half of it trying to get me to figure out just who the french were playing. during euro 2004, he watched every game twice. that kind of enthusiasm, which i as a baseball player have done nothing to encourage, is wonderful. and this is why i care so much about football now: it is so simple, and so beautiful, and so all-encompassing. It is truly all that is good about humanity. And this is why Rob Hughes is one of the best writers on the planet.
cheers, pp_f

ps everyone in Canada thinks 'soccer' is a women's game.

Celtic beat Dundee 3 - 0 today. Apparently the goals were pretty good, Henri Camara banged 2 in. Very skillful Senagalese striker, O'Neill is working out his team for the visit of Barcelona on Tuesday.

I have tickets, still don't know if i'll go or not. I quite like watching on the TV, better view and then the reaction on the net straight after. I don't buy into the £39 a ticket shit - i was given them as a bonus by Scottish Power - apart from that i don't want to watch the game with twats.

I know that this thread is a World Cup thread but the Celts are MY team. I am proud to say that the mighty Barcelona are scared of us. They are scared of 60,000 supporters screaming at them and then there's the team - a team that will not give up, they will throw everything they have at them, every tackle, quite an intimidating environment for any part time Barca playboys.

As i have said before on this site.

C'Mon the Hoops.

I do shite it from Ronaldinho though - he is a skillful mthrfkr. We have Juninho though - game on.

EDIT - PS - i think Celtic will win, maybe 1 -0, maybe 2 -1 ......

If you had a real operating system, like Windows XP, you wouldn't have to worry about your system crashing while you were typing in a response on Internet Explorer.

Someone needs to buy this guy a new computer. If someone is willing to start a pool, I could toss in a couple hundred bucks.

pp_f, your computer h4x0ring habits are beyond sad.

hey, i can give him a box that has an onboard 1600 amd, sound, lan, modem. all of the regular stuff. damm, i could even set it up with raid 5 if he wanted it.

i've offered him hardware in the past. he just likes his minimalistic system of high tech things. :D

The Hoops beaten by AC Milan, i was gutted.
AC Milan scored in the 9th minute, Celtic fought back and in the 2nd half scored a well deserved equaliser only to fall foul to 2 late strikes by the Italians, one because Thompson had to go off with a hamstring injury (team readjustment) and then a deflected free kick.

4 games to go - looks like a nightmare struggle for qualification, someone has to take points off AC Milan and Barca.

After a number of defeats the Scotland team are on the verge of sacking their manager Berti Voghts
